LCSK: Abacus Describes his Remix Jam

by Lushlife on October 10, 2009

Oh man! Spencer Stephenson, the man behind Abacus, just dropped me a line, updating us on his creative process, remixing Meridian Sound [Part Two] for the Leisure Class/Stick-up Kids project. It sounds amazing. Click ‘more’ to peep his thoughts on the project and his recording/remixing process!

Abacus says:

My focus as of late has been on creating my first LP, and my approach to that has bled over into the re-imagining of this track from Cassette City. This means my contribution to the remix project should conjure the same murky, botanic imagery you can expect from the first Abacus release… In other words a lot of gently ambling guitar painted on hazy, flowery beds of samples.

The sounds I was supplied by [Lushlife] to do this remix are so exceptional that I imagine it would sound great in anyone’s hands. I’ve started to transform Meridian Sound [Part 2] into a somewhat upbeat pop song, and the bare instrumentation provides a lot of room to work.

I’ve edited some of the piano parts to have different changes than those of the original track, and I’ve added drums, guitar and some other sparse percussion. Far back in the mix, you’ll hear chamber-y vocals that quote some of the highlights of Lush’s verse… This is actually one of my first forays into remixing. I’m taking the term “remix” quite literally, imagining this song exactly as it would sound on an Abacus album.

Holy shit, guys! Dude is really hitting the nail on the head with what we’re trying to do with this project. For more information on Abacus and his incredible tunes, visit his MySpace page.
